Roots That Hold

Read: Psalm 1:1-6 (KJV)

1Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. 4The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. 5Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

What it means

Psalm 1 describes two kinds of lives. One is like a tree planted by water, steady and fruitful no matter the season. The other is like chaff, the dry husk that blows away in the wind. The difference is not talent or circumstance. It is what the person feeds on and who they walk with. The psalm notices a slow drift: first walking with the wrong counsel, then standing with them, then sitting down and settling in. Nobody wakes up one day far from God. It happens through small choices about where you spend your time, whose voices fill your head, and what you scroll past at midnight. College and early adulthood are full of new voices. Some will help you grow, and some will quietly pull you away. The tree in this psalm does not avoid storms. It simply has roots deep enough to survive them. Delighting in God's word is not a chore you check off. It is how roots grow, a little each day, until you are steady enough to bear fruit in every season.

Key verse

“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

Psalm 1:3 (KJV)

Think about it

  1. Whose counsel are you walking in right now? Who are the loudest voices in your life?
  2. Where do you notice yourself drifting from walking, to standing, to sitting?
  3. What is one small, daily habit that could help your roots grow deeper this month?
