A Giant Named Goliath
Today's Bible story
From 1 Samuel 17:1-30
The army of Israel was getting ready for battle against the Philistines. The two armies stood on two hills with a valley in between. Out from the Philistine camp came a giant named Goliath. He was very, very tall. He wore a heavy helmet and a coat of armor. Goliath shouted, "Choose a man to come fight me!" When King Saul and his soldiers heard this, they were very afraid. Every morning and every evening for forty days, Goliath came out and shouted. Nobody would go fight him. David's three oldest brothers were in Saul's army. One day Jesse sent David to bring them food: grain, ten loaves of bread, and ten cheeses. When David got there, he heard Goliath shouting. He saw the soldiers run away scared. David asked, "Who is this man who speaks against the armies of the living God?" His brother Eliab got angry with him. But David was not afraid. He knew God was bigger than any giant.
Verse to remember
“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Joshua 1:9 (KJV)
Talk about it
- Why was everyone afraid of Goliath?
- Why did David go to the army camp?
- Why was David not afraid?
Pray
Dear God, You are bigger than anything that scares me. Help me be strong and brave because You are always with me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
