God Chooses David
Today's Bible story
From 1 Samuel 16:1-13
God told the prophet Samuel to go to Bethlehem, to the house of a man named Jesse. God had chosen one of Jesse's sons to be the next king of Israel. Samuel filled his horn with oil and went. When Samuel saw Jesse's oldest son, Eliab, he thought, "This must be the one." Eliab was tall and looked strong. But God said to Samuel, "Do not look at how tall he is or how he looks. People look on the outside, but the LORD looks on the heart." Jesse had seven sons pass in front of Samuel. But God had not chosen any of them. Samuel asked, "Are all your children here?" Jesse said, "There is still the youngest. He is out taking care of the sheep." They sent for him. His name was David. When David came in, God said, "This is the one." Samuel poured the oil on David's head. From that day on, the Spirit of the LORD came upon David.
Verse to remember
“But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7 (KJV)
Talk about it
- Where was David when Samuel came to visit?
- Does God look at the outside or the heart?
- Who did God choose to be the next king?
Pray
